How Far In Advance Do You Plan Travel?

I love travel planning. Whether it's researching destinations, flight options, area restaurants, or reading guidebooks, I like to be thinking about my next trip. Today, it became pretty clear to me that we're going to be "free" to travel in May/June 2016. I had been tentatively holding the first half of 2016 to attend a friend's wedding in Europe, but it sounds like it will be in late 2016 at the earliest. So, now it's time to plan travel again!

Within hours I had settled on a destination—one that has been on the wish list for a few years. I'm now researching options to road trip through western Germany, including Dusseldorf, the Rhine Valley, and the Black Forest. I'll need to run the plans by Aaron (how can he say no to Germany?) and wait for award booking to open up in 1-2 months, but it won't be long and I'll likely have another trip on the calendar.

In the meantime, we have an October trip to Portland, OR, and the long-awaited trip to southeast Asia in December. Am I the only one that likes to book travel this far in advance? Based on what I see from fellow river cruisers at Cruise Critic, I'm thinking no (some are already planning 2017 travel). Planning a trip an entire year in advance gives me more time to dream, research, and plan. For me, it works. What about you?
